Regular classes run from September to April of each year. In April and May we host our annual Spring Thing which is a chance for students from all levels to come together and explore different aspects of dance in more depth than can be done in regular classes. Please join us!

Adult classes run in seven week blocks and are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Registration is on the first night of each block of classes. It usually only takes about 15 minutes so please do be prepared to dance on that first night. You can speed up the registration process and shorten the line-ups by downloading a registration form and bringing it in already completed. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader® installed on your computer to view the registration form. If you don't already have it, its available as a free download by clicking the appropriate link in the box below.

We offer several levels of classes. If you have taken classes with other teachers but are new to our technique and teaching style, we will ask that you start with beginners. Each teacher has a different style, technique and way of describing moves so you and we will find it easier to work from the same perspective.

We use a building block method of teaching. This means that you will learn a number of moves at each level of dance that you can put in your dance “toolkit” and bring out when you free dance. We will add variations to these basic moves as you progress through the classes.

Our primary focus in the classes is improvisational dance – dancing to the music as it inspires you at the time. This is, in essence, the most traditional type of Egyptian dance so we feel it is critical that students learn this. This means you can put on any type of music and be able to dance. It also means that you can more easily develop choreographies down the road if you so choose because you know what steps work with what part of music.

If you decide to move into advanced we will introduce choreographies and opportunities for stage performances. However, we have had students who have stayed at the intermediate levels for years because they just want to dance.

Course Offering;

Beginners

In this level, we work on stretching techniques for middle eastern dance, proper posture, dance walks, basic traveling hips, basic hip circles, shoulder, hands, neck and head movements and standing shimmy. At the end of this session, you will have enough moves to dance to any basic piece of middle eastern music.
What to bring: Comfortable clothes that stretch but that are not so big that we can’t see movement in the legs, pelvis and upper body. Bare feet preferred or dance sandals/flat shoes.

Intermediates 1

In this level, we add a traveling basic step, body undulations, introduction to ¾ shimmy, figure eights and veils. In addition, we add variations on the moves learned in the beginners class and focus on isolations.
What else to bring: Hip scarf, practice veil

Intermediates 2

In this level we again build on the steps in the previous levels, adding texture, variation and layering movements. We introduce floor work and zills, shimmy and hip variations.
What else to bring: Zills

Advanced Technique

At this level, we continue to build on the complexities of the movements learned to date, layering and combinations, focusing on details and presentation. Students will work on their own style and spend a portion of each class on interpretive dance.

Advanced Choreography

Open to students who have completed at least 1 advanced level and are enrolled in at least one other technique class, this class will focus totally on choreographies that are performed by DancEgypt Dance Co.

Choreography, staging and performance techniques will be introduced. Students in this class will be provided the opportunity to perform as a group for community events, student recitals and haflas as these opportunities come up. Each class will consist of technique, choreography, and interpretive dance.

(While this class is geared to performance, you will not be required to perform in public. Please let us know your intentions so that we can arrange choreographies accordingly.)

What else to bring: practice skirt, second practice veil, cane

Bellycize

This new course teaches the same general dance moves but at a more relaxed pace then our regular classes. It's a fun and friendly atmosphere for gentle exercise designed especially for seniors, pregnant women, those with other physical limitations, or just those who prefer take it a little more slowly.

DancEgypt Performing Troupe

Over the years, DancEgypt has worked hard to establish a presence in the community and a reputation for delivering well executed, professional performances. It has taken several years to establish the base of music, costumes, networks, training and level of dancers that have the abilities and commitment required to provide the level of dance expected by an ever growing sophistication in the market. As a result, we have searched for, and been provided with, opportunities for our dancers to perform at events such as conventions, special events, and parties.

To ensure that we can consistently supply the calibre of performance needed, we have developed a professional troupe which prepares for and performs for these events. Entrance into the troupe is by invitation only. If a student is interested in this level, they can contact the directors.

What to Wear

We wear regular exercise clothes to class (lycra pants/shorts/sweats and t-shirt) or whatever else you're comfortable in. The important thing is to make sure it's not too baggy. We need to see how your hips are moving.

We usually dance barefoot so you don't need any special footwear.

You may want to bring a fringe hip scarf and usually we dancers search the second hand thrift stores for them (approx $3.00). They seem to be in fashion now so you can usually pick something up at the fashion shops for around $12-$25.00. Some people like to purchase a beaded hip scarf which can be from $35 - $100. Periodically, we will find a good supply and have, on occasion, been able to offer them to class participants for a very reasonable price. Again hip belts are optional for beginner classes.

In intermediates, we ask that you also have a veil - approx 2.5 meters x 115 centimetres of light fabric, and the cost of that can range from very cheap (old shear drapes) to very expensive (silk) depending on your own personal preferences.

At some point you may want to make a practice skirt. This again is optional. Most of us sew our own (we hold mini workshops on how-to) and for those who don't sew, we have some excellent seamstresses in class who sell skirts, costumes, veils, etc.
