Why did you start dancing?

I wanted a movement activity with music that I could actually do after having had several kids, and saw DancEgypt perform at a school function. The performers were having such fun – all ages and shapes - and the dance was beautiful!

Why are you still dancing?

I love performing dance and sharing that joy with others. I have been a dancer since the age of 4 and a performer since age 10. I love – no, NEED – to express music with my body, and have found the perfect combination in belly dance: compelling rhythm and melodies, expressive movement, feminine celebration, camaraderie with other women, and an opportunity to share the joy of dance with an audience. I’m also firmly addicted to costuming. I began teaching beginner and intermediate levels in my small town 4 years ago, and it’s still going strong!

What is your “real” job?

Raising kids and keeping house, teaching various subjects in middle years and high school, part-time seamstress and owner of a home-based costuming business.

Why did you start dancing?
I married into an Egyptian family and at every party or wedding etc, there is belly dancing. I wanted to learn how to do it correctly so I could dance with my family. It was also very important to me to get my body back after two C-sections and belly dancing was the perfect way to do it. It is working out without even realizing it.
Why are you still dancing?
I love the dance, the costumes, performing, how it makes me feel, but most of all I love all the people I dance with. It really is like a big family of sisters!
What is your “real” job?
I am a stay at home mom, as well as a volunteer for my church and president of my kids School Community Counsel

Why did you start dancing?

For several reasons. Fitness was the top priority and the fact that I loved the dance form so much, has kept me motivated and passionate about continuing. It is true when they say that time flies when you're having fun!

Why did you start dancing?

Honestly, I was inspired by Shakira. Many people would say she isn’t a “traditional” belly dancer, but her hip movements, undulations, and myas were mesmerizing and when I saw an ad on a bulletin board for DancEgypt I couldn’t wait to start!

Why are you still dancing?

I love the dance, the music and the women. The ladies I’ve met and have had the pleasure of dancing with make it so much more than just a class or a workout. Also, the dance is a beautiful thing to watch. Most days I can’t decide what I love more, dancing or watching!

What is your “real” job?

I’m a Professional Student; and I waitress on weekends. I have been taking classes full and part time since 2001. I am now taking Pharmacy and am looking forward to convocating in 2012

Why did you start dancing?

I started dancing before I can remember. Having tried a variety of different styles of dance I thought that taking Middle Eastern dance classes would be fun and different.

Why are you still dancing?

I am deeply in love with it!
Compared to the other styles of dance I have taken, Middle Eastern dance feels the most right in my body. There are so many areas pertaining to this form of dance where I can learn and grow. Besides the movements there is the cultural connection, the music, the language, the costuming etc. From the top of my head to the soles of my feet Middle Eastern dance has also helped me to develop a wonderful love and appreciation of my body since it is through my body that I am able to express myself when I dance. This joy I get from dancing is reinforced so much more when I go to class and I see all the other women, so diverse in shape, size and age, sharing the same love as me and expressing it each in their own individual way. This aspect is truly what makes the dance so beautiful!

Why did you start dancing?

I took belly dance classes to cope with a period of a lot of change and low self-esteem. I was newly separated, adjusting to single-parenthood of two young kids and starting a new job that required me to be on the road about 50% of the time. Belly dance grounded me, helped me deal with the stress and gave me back my confidence.

Why are you still dancing?

Belly dance still grounds me – it's like meditation (really enthusiastic, musical meditation). I love that it's a dance that values the interpretive instead of just having a 'right' way. Many other dance forms are expressive, but I like that in belly dance, the dancer's personality is an integral part of the dance.

Why did you start dancing?

I started dancing because I wanted to reconnect with my body and myself. I always dreamt of being a “dancer” and I wanted to learn a form of dance that didn’t require previous training. I was also looking for a form of exercise that would complement weight and cardio training and be fun in the process

Why are you still dancing?

This form of dance is one that is complex and layered in meaning. The physical benefits are amazing; it works you internally and externally! More importantly, belly dance celebrates the beauty found in every woman, no matter our age, our size, or our appearance. For me, it changed my life by changing my perceptions of my body and myself. Now, I will always be a belly dancer, not just when I am performing publicly or practicing in a class, but also in my day-to-day life. I carry the lessons given to me through belly dance everywhere with me. The dance is present in everything I do and I know there is more for me to learn.... I know I am only at the tip of understanding, and moving within, the depth of Baladi and of myself.
